Is ‘Daily Painting’ an Art Movement?

by ming

Every week, we ask artist over at artmakr weekend an art related question, and they have been very generous to share their expertise, and experience. This week’s question was Is daily painting an art movement?” an I will share their answers with you later in the post.

But before that, let me clarify what I think I know about daily painting .(and you’re all welcome to jump in and add your 2 cents in the comments below)

Surely painters have been painting everyday from as soon as painting was invented. But the context we’re looking at here is when a certain Duane Keiser, started a blog in 2004 called ‘A painting a day’ . Where he posted small postcard sized paintings and linked his post to his ebay auctions. The beauty of it, they started selling, and selling well.

And all of a sudden, there is Art, without all the snooty, fartsy things that  somehow get associated with art. A movement is born?

Some other artist followed in his footsteps, others did the very same thing without ever knowing that Duane Keiser did it first. And now, it seems everyone is doing it.

Is this whole daily painting thing an ‘Art Movement’ worthy of art history? I’ll let You answer that.

There are 4 key players in the ‘Daily Painting art movement’ Duane Keiser, Blogger, Ebay and You.

And now as promised earlier, here is what You think.

Enjoy.

We asked, “Is Daily Painting an art movement?” and this is what the artist at artmakr weekend replied:

“Maybe! I think is a way to explore your art possibility and limits.” -Alessandro Andreuccetti

“yes.” -trudette

“Yes, as it truly is a unique type of painting one that is completed in one day that doesn’t require rework or reexamination. “ -stacy kathryn

“Indeed it is … the internet has opened doors for artists & put the power of sales & marketing in the artists hand. I am a daily painter & I do 8 square paintings a week & post them to my blog, PaintSquared.com. It has been a life changing experience: I have learned discipline; my eye is quick to see color & composition; my painting & drawing skills have improved; I sell to people all over North America. Being a daily painter is awesome! :-)” -Elizabeth Fraser

Yes; daily painting is a movement that makes fine art affordable to the beginner collector during a time when many galleries are closing doors.”-AscenderRisesAbove

I think it’s more a way of life than an art movement…a maxim to live by for aspiring or established artists…the really good or trying to be better artist…anyone who loves art and making art, in all it’s very varied forms” -Esther Geh

“I think people have doing “daily paintings” for awhile but now, because of blogs, they have an easier way to show them” -Bill Nagel

“Let’s hope so.” -Martin Hoogeboom

“haha . . it’s been around forever but it does appear to be an online art movement and I couldn’t resist joining.” -Ria Hills

“Apparently it has become known as a movement - however it has existed for a very long time.” -BJ Wright

And that’s just the start of it.. now it’s your turn:)

Do you think ‘Daily Painting’ is an art movement? What are your thoughts on the subject? (just one note on commenting: try to add to the conversation instead of ending it;)

I am convinced that it is an art movement. Most of all, because artists themselves decide if it is. And if they say so, it must be so!

It seems to be a movement. When I tell my friends and family that I’m keeping a “Daily Painting” blog they are fascinated. For me it’s a way of disciplining myself to paint every day and to improve. One more note: Most days when I write about what I’ve painted I see a correlation between what I’ve painted and my moods and feelings. I like that instant gratification and I like all the ideas and studies I’m creating for future large works.

  4. Sandra Flood Says:

It certainly seems to be a successful internet art movement but it has always been an important part in developing your skills as a painter. A painting a day has been advised by some of the great art instructors through out history. Most notably, William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri to name a few from the past.
    Nice website you have here!

  5. Morgaine Swann Says:

I think it’s a very particular kind of movement -a populist one that puts art in the hands of the people. The painter has complete control of the subject, the outcome and the marketing, and the buyer has immediate access to the image and can own it for a very reasonable price. It’s real art available to the masses for prices they can afford. I think it’s really wonderful.

Almost anyone could start a small collection of varied painters that could be displayed on a wall or even in an album, creating your own portable gallery of art that is perfectly suited to their individual taste. I love that it completely bypasses the power structure of the art world. It’s not dependent upon schools, galleries, critics, grants or major collectors.

I know there are even some places that have small works of art available in vending machines. That’s taking it to its logical extreme, and you don’t have the kind of choice in those cases that you do with a website that features 100 artists or so, but it is accessible in a whole new way. At a time when our culture is seeing the end of art education in the public school system, people have found a way to keep art at the center of the new tech culture.
